The twelve houses: where in a chart something is placed
If signs describe a style, houses describe an area of life. This is how the two systems differ.

Signs versus houses
A frequent beginner confusion is mixing up signs and houses. Signs are divisions of the ecliptic; houses are divisions of local space measured from the horizon. A planet sits in both a sign and a house at once, and the two answers different questions.
The house cycle
- Houses 1–6 are traditionally called personal houses; houses 7–12 are called interpersonal or collective houses.
- House 1 begins at the Ascendant; the opposite house 7 begins at the Descendant.
- The Midheaven anchors house 10 in most quadrant house systems; the Imum Coeli anchors house 4.
- Different house systems (Placidus, Whole Sign, Equal, and others) divide the same circle differently, so house placement can vary by method.
Why birth time matters here again
House cusps rotate with the Earth, so an approximate birth time produces approximate houses. A responsible chart tool says so explicitly instead of presenting a guessed time as exact.
House meanings are traditional interpretations, not measured facts. They are offered for entertainment and self-reflection.
