Two independent axes
Each of the twelve zodiac signs can be classified along two axes: an element and a modality. Combining them produces a three-by-four grid in which every sign has one element and one modality.
The four elements
- Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
- Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.
- Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.
- Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
The three modalities
- Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn.
- Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius.
- Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces.
Why the grid is useful
The grid is a memory aid for traditional sign descriptions. It is a classification system, not an empirical measurement, and different astrological traditions attach different nuances to the same cells. It is presented here as reference material for entertainment and self-reflection.
