What a natal chart actually shows
A natal chart is a map of the sky at your moment of birth. Here is what it contains, and what it does not.

A map, not a prediction
A natal chart (also called a birth chart) is a two-dimensional diagram of the sky calculated for the exact date, time and place of a birth. It records where the Sun, Moon and planets appeared relative to the horizon at that moment, and divides that circle into sections. It is a starting framework for interpretation, not a statement about what will happen.
The layers inside the wheel
- The zodiac signs: twelve equal divisions of the ecliptic used as a coordinate system.
- The planets: points whose positions are computed for the birth moment.
- The houses: twelve divisions of local space, derived from the rotation of the Earth.
- The aspects: angular relationships between points, such as 0°, 60°, 90°, 120° and 180°.
- The angles: the Ascendant and Midheaven, which depend heavily on birth time and location.
Why the same date is not the same chart
Two people born on the same day in different cities, or even a few hours apart in the same city, can have different houses and a different rising sign. That is why an accurate chart asks for birth time and place, not just a birthday.
